Montgomery Village Garden Club was Founded in 1995. We are a small but consistent group of 25 members founded in 1995 to study, practice and promote gardening and its related arts an sciences in the community. The club provides monthly programs open to the public in a local community center on these topics.
Under the guidance of former member, the late Marion Caldwell, a past president of the National Capital Area of Garden Clubs, we placed a Blue Star Memorial marker in the middle island of Montgomery Village Avenue.
We also participate in several outreach programs in our community. Members of the garden club are helping to maintain the grounds of the Hospice Caring Cottage in Gaithersburg. Hospice Caring is a nonprofit organization that provides non-medical support to families with someone in hospice. Once a month members of the club pick up trash, week and trim the garden around the cottage.
One of our members participates as the Community Representative on the Asbury Methodist Village Wildlife Habitat Steering Committee that attempts to provide a habitat for native plants and wildlife on its grounds. Asbury’s scenic campus is home to a 17-acre nature preserve.
The entire 130-acre campus has been certified as a “Wildlife at Work” site by the Wildlife Habitat Council. What began as a group of residents turning part of the campus into a bird sanctuary became a larger initiative, steering by a volunteer campus council of residents and associates. Their dedication to protecting area wildlife has created a safe haven for some of the campus’ most unusual inhabitants – a herd of deer, foxes, nesting birds, waterfowl and endangered honey bees. Located near Montgomery Village, the whole community has gotten involved in the preservation and beautification of the Asbury campus.
